The Sacred Journey: Key Events

The Ambalapuzha Petta Thullal is not just a dance; it is a sequence of divine rituals spanning days, celebrating devotion, tradition, and community service.

Aazhi Pooja Fire Ritual

Aazhi Pooja

The Aazhi Pooja is the sacred fire ritual performed at the Ambalapuzha Temple premises before the journey begins. Devotees circle a massive bonfire, chanting "Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa," symbolizing the burning of impurities and ego before stepping onto the holy path. It marks the spiritual preparation of the Sangham.

Annadanam Food Distribution

Annadanam

Considered one of the highest forms of charity, Annadanam (offering of food) is organized throughout the pilgrimage. The Sangham ensures that thousands of devotees are fed nutritious traditional meals, believing that serving the devotee is equivalent to serving Lord Ayyappa himself.

Ratha Yatra Procession

Ratha Yatra (Ghoshayatra)

The grand procession, often referred to as the Ratha Yatra or Ghoshayatra, carries the Golden Thidambu of Lord Ayyappa. Accompanied by caparisoned elephants, traditional percussion (Chenda Melam), and thousands of devotees, this majestic journey moves from Ambalapuzha towards Erumeli, stopping at temples to receive honors.

Manimala Temple Ritual

Manimala Aazhi Pooja

A significant stopover occurs at the Manimalakkavu Devi Temple. Here, a special Aazhi Pooja is conducted. It is a historic meeting point where the traditions of the Goddess (Devi) and Lord Ayyappa converge, strengthening the bond between the local community and the traveling Sangham.

Erumeli Petta Thullal Dance

Erumeli Petta Thullal

The climax of the journey. Upon sighting the Krishna Parunthu (Sacred Eagle), the Sangham dances through Erumeli. Pilgrims paint their bodies in colors and dance to the rhythm of the woods, commemorating Ayyappa's victory over Mahishi. The procession visits the Vavar Mosque, a unique tradition symbolizing religious harmony.

Pampa Sadhya Feast

Pampa Sadhya & Vilakku

Upon reaching the holy River Pampa, the Sangham hosts the Pampa Sadhya, a grand feast served to all pilgrims. Following this, the Pampa Vilakku (lighting of lamps) is performed, illuminating the riverbanks as the devotees prepare for the final ascent to the Sannidhanam.

Makaravilakku Light

Makaravilakku Darshanam

The most auspicious moment. The Sangham witnesses the Makaravilakku, the divine light that appears on the Ponnambalamedu hill, and the Makara Jyothi star. It represents the ultimate spiritual realization and the culmination of the pilgrimage season.

Offering Nivedhyam

Mahanivedhyam

This is the supreme offering of food to the deity. The Ambalapuzha Sangham has special privileges to offer Mahanivedhyam to Lord Ayyappa, a tradition that dates back centuries, signifying the deep link between the Ambalapuzha Temple and Sabarimala.

Seeveli Elephant Procession

Seeveli Ezhunnallathu

The ceremonial procession of the deity atop a caparisoned elephant, known as Seeveli, takes place at the Sannidhanam. The Ambalapuzha Sangham participates with fervor, accompanied by the resounding beats of the traditional orchestra.

Karpooraazhi Fire

Karpooraazhi Pooja

A spectacular ritual where hundreds of camphor torches are lit. The Karpooraazhi is a visual prayer invoking the light of knowledge to dispel the darkness of ignorance. It creates a mesmerizing atmosphere of golden light at the temple premises.

Return Journey

Uthram Yatra

Marking the conclusion, the Uthram Yatra is the return journey or specific procession related to the Uthram star (Lord Ayyappa's birth star). The Sangham returns with the satisfaction of a pilgrimage completed, carrying the blessings back to Ambalapuzha.
